WFO: “FARMERS ARE DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR GROWING FOOD IN ALL ITS FORMS”“AT THE MOMENT, OVER 80% OF THE INVESTEMENT IN AGRICULTURE IS MADE BY FARMERS"

This is the challenge that Robert Carlson, President of World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), launched yesterday April 4 in Madrid at the High Level Consultation , the third and final phase of the Global Thematic Consultation on Hunger, Food Security and Nutrition. This overall process takes place in the context of a series of eleven Global Thematic Consultations facilitated by the UN and complemented by close to 100 national-level consultations. The meeting featured high level representatives with speeches from Mr. Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General; Dr. Graziano da Silva, FAO Director General and Mr. Mariano Rajoy, Spanish Prime Minister. “We have – continued Carlson during his speech - the ability to provide enough food for the future, but it will not happen automatically, because we have a lot of work to do. At the moment, over 80% of the investment in agriculture is made by farmers. They are directly responsible for growing food in all its forms”. Carlson wanted to stress the fundamental role played by farmers in developing countries, who are in need of support in order to sustainably improve and increase their production. “To achieve this objective, farmers must be active players in the formulation of policies aimed at achieving food security and good nutrition for a growing population in a time of climate change and urbanization. Farmers feel the need to take positive action soon. They need to have ownership in that action to achieve success. ”Robert Carlson also highlighted the role of women in agriculture; the main guardians of crucial livestock diversity”. Carlson reiterated the key role of farmers in global food security and nutrition: “As farmers, we are ready to share responsibility and accept accountability for eliminating hunger and providing nutritious food. We are ready to go to work as primary partners in this vital challenge”.
